I put together a small room where people can sit with music and art. It’s an experimental business. The goal isn’t to make money but to uncover and establish alternative methods for serving creative communities.  To offer an alternative place / experience(s) where we can share space with one another and the things people make. It’s a place interested in working with those who create or love: sound art [music], printed matter, alternative technology, and experiences. It’s also made for folks who care about how their work gets presented, not just that it gets sold.

What is it?

does peel exist?

We’re an independently founded + funded alternative space in Portland, OR.

Depending on the week we operate as a showroom, listening room, media shop or creative studio.

Configured to slow down how we encounter art and to platform the artists who make it. sustainability in mind.

Why?

does peel exist?

As artists, we've traded meaningful exchange for the convenience of online presence. As a result, we’ve slowly lost control over how our work is presented and experienced. The way most online platforms work is incredibly frustrating to navigate as an artist. We all know big tech’s attention economy is structured to prevent sustained focus. The platforms use “variable-reward mechanics” [akin to a slot machine], paired with mechanics like infinite-scroll to maximize bullshit engagement metrics. It’s fragmenting our attention and devaluing our creative work.

This small room is a place which operates from different principles. It’s a first stab and a test. It will refine over time but will stay a place for human creations, human curation, serving creative communities, and doing things differently.
